Home Depot have over 2,100 stores across all 50 US States. They are the second largest US retailer behind WalMart. These guys think big so their site should be excellent, right?

How easy is it to navigate around the site? We tried and tested it out and graded. .
Go Home

Home Depot have an incredibly large range of goods ranging from building materials through to kitchen cutlery. Their store is split into product groups and has a menu breaking down categories further into narrower product ranges. You are then given filters such as category, price and brand to further whittle down your choice.

There are lots of informational pages and guides that can also be accessed on the site. Unfortunately far too many of these failed to open during our visit.

Another comment is that the home page gets straight down to business.  No welcome message, no instructions on getting the best out of the site.

The Home Depot site is let down by a cold welcome and patchy page links.

Why is it different to other stores online? We graded on originality, design, backgrounds, colors, style and innovation..

You are able to select individual products to compare one against the other before making a final decision. Home Depot’s online store contains a solid ‘know how’ section containing information about how to select products and also giving instructions on various DIY jobs.  However, disappointingly, many of these pages failed to load during our visit.

There were some helpful features, like the calculator function to help you determine how many cans of paint to purchase or how many rolls of wallpaper.

The site also offers other ways to learn, such as their home improvers club which includes tuition videos and even their own online TV channel, with a range of informational and tuition based programming.

Finally, they also have an environmental element with advice about going green.

Home Depot provide an online store with the added bonus of instructional guides, videos and so much more.  Very creative and caters for the full range of interests and needs of customers with all levels of DIY expertise.

How easy is it to locate and use the online shopping cart? We check out the check out..

The shopping cart completes in five simple pages and follows the standard information gathering process. They use SSL technology to secure their check out.

As with Victoria’s Secret Home Depot do share personal information, shopping history and other information with third party companies.  You actively have to opt out of this if you want to confine your details to Home Depot. We dislike the need to opt out and preferred shops offering opt in statements.

There is a ‘savings’ category with current offers and clearance listed by category.  The main product range has a wide variety of good at varied degrees of affordability.  Some products seemed a little pricey to us but then again, cheaper options were available.  Lots of choice for all pockets here.
