Dell specialize in PCs and computer related products as well as other media devices.  They are a multinational conglomerate who think big – but does their site rise to their heady standards?

How easy is it to navigate around the site? We tried and tested it out and graded. .
Dell Hell

Dell have a massive range of products and have made every effort to organize their site well.  We liked the customer rating system which was well used and helpful. The site contains lots of detailed product information and is a useful aid for customers wishing to research different items.

There is categorization by product followed by filters for price range, brand, top rated etc.  Despite this the online store still has a rather cluttered, confused feel about it.

In addition to navigational issues, the pages all take too long to load, with some not loading at all. Overall, finding what you are looking for takes longer than necessary.

Why is it different to other stores online? We graded on originality, design, backgrounds, colors, style and innovation..

Although Dell’s site appears flashy and they obviously try hard to innovate, they ‘wrong foot’ it far too often.

They have lots of information pages to support customers but you need the patience of a saint to wait for these to load and many of them fail to open at all.

Another faulty feature is their attempt to support those needing larger print.  Although praiseworthy, they yet again score an ‘own goal’ by having the ‘large text’ icon right at the bottom of the screen in a small font – not easy for someone with a visual impairment to find. Overall… lots of effort but far too many areas of this site need a re-think, work too slowly or don’t work at all.  Dell would be better off keeping it simple - innovation is only worthwhile when it works!

How easy is it to locate and use the online shopping cart? We check out the check out..

The online shopping cart is treated by Dell as an additional place to exploit sales.

We looked at a flat screen TV and were sent through consecutive screens promoting wall mounts, stands, gaming consoles, insurance, speakers, blu ray players and all range of products, before finally arriving at the purchasing page.  However, other products did appear to have easier routes to the checkout and just contained a prompt for recommended items which all appeared to be useful additional purchases.

Aside from their over zealous promotions policy, the shopping cart has a far more serious fault – it has an annoying habit of failing to load or taking overly long to materialize.

The shopping cart is the heart of any online store and Dell’s over promotion of products, alongside their failing cart was a disappointing aspect of their site.

What do you get for your money? How competitive are the prices, what can you get for your money and are there special deals for online customers?.
We fished around and did find some products slightly cheaper but not by much.

How interactive is this site? Is there a Facebook Group? Twitter? RSS feeds? Linked In? Forum? We found out..

Dell have a community area to their site which encompasses a blog, forum, groups and wikis.  This is well-used and a great feature, giving customers additional support and information.

They are also linked in to Facebook and Twitter and their blog has an RSS feed.

We may have some serious misgivings about Dell’s online store but they certainly know how to network compared to much of the competition.

Can you contact the site with queries? This grades the email support, live chat and telephone contacts available to users..

Dell’s site contains product, order and topic support. They also have paid support options, such as services to set up and tune in your TV, speed up your computer or set up a PC and wireless network.

Dell have traditional email and telephone support too.  The icing on the cake though is their online chat help function, which is not only available from every page but from time to time flashes up on the screen prompting you that help is at hand if you need it.
