You need to have a Facebook account and to have downloaded the Marketplace application to begin selling.

You are then presented with four categories you can utilize:

1.Sell It
2. Sell for a Cause
3. Give It Away and
4. Ask for It

 

Once an item is listed you can then promote it yourself or ask up to 5 friends to promote it on their news feed. There is a listings management feature so that you can keep track of your individual postings.
A nice touch is the fact that you can forward ads you are interested in to your network of friends alongside messages such as, ‘should I buy this?’ Any items you put up for sale also show up in your news profile and when you create ads you also have the option to share them with friends.  These features give the Facebook Marketplace a real niche as a truly social marketplace that maximizes on its networks of friends.

What types of products can I buy and sell on this site? Or what can't I buy and sell on this site? We know the deal..
There are a wide range of products on offer in the online shop but the service is still relatively new and other sites probably have more choice of individual items in many categories.

Very important for marketplaces - how well organized are the product or service categories? Is it easy to find what you are looking for? Or is this a maze?.

The site contains nice, clear product categories.  Our search for a teddy bear paid off here and not only were we provided with listings but a pop up offered to filter these by location so we could view those nearest to us first.

On the negative side the listing contained unrelated products which should not have been in our category.  For example, for some reason our search for teddy bears ended up including lots of live puppies for sale.  Go figure.

The products available are great but the navigation lacks precision.

Payment options were not catered for via Facebook, this is not an e-commerce site but run on the same lines as classified ads.  Individuals can be contacted via their Facebook wall or contact email and some list phone numbers too.  You will need to make your own arrangements for payment.

Although some may have security fears about this, classified ads have worked perfectly well for years prior to the arrival of the
Social Market
net. If you follow a few simple precautions you can minimize the risks. The upside is no listing fee and no transaction or final value fees.  This site may be simple and unsophisticated but it is FREE.

Quality of the information. Here we look at the quality of the product descriptions, design and images on the website. Does the content give you a good idea of how the product looks and feels?.

The product listings were short and sweet, in line with the classified nature of the site.  Most listings had photos but not all and some that did contain photos were unclear.

The site has a real ‘markety’ feel about it, very amateurish and a little disorganized but then it is precisely this type of place where bargains can be found.

If in doubt liaise with the vendor about further product details, better photos and make sure you feel happy about what is on offer before making any commitment.

What is the shipping policy here? Does the site offer express, next day delivery, guaranteed or international shipping? We read the small print and count the costs. .
Again, no central policy or support from Facebook here.  You’re on your own.
