The online auction site that launched a thousand wannabees.  Ebay is said to have hundreds of millions of worldwide users but in 2010 is the site still relevant, current and keeping up with the competition? We gave them a thorough ‘once over’ to find out.

There are three ways to sell on e-Bay, via time-bound auctions, fixed price format or fixed price with best offer accepted.  Vendors need to create a selling account for which they need a valid credit card and then just set up a listing page.

In terms of costs there is an insertion fee for each item ($0.10 up to $4.00 depending on the value of the starting price).  There are also additional features you can add to enhance your listing which have associated costs.

There is also a final value fee which is currently 8.75% up to $25 and 3.5% charged for the value after $25 up to $1,000 and finally, for items over $1,000 there is 1.5% for the remaining amount over $1,000.  Selling costs can mount up on this site but the process is simple and they offer lots of choice.

e-Bay is famed for its eclectic range of products up for grabs.  Many international conglomerates trade through e-Bay, as well as local stores and amateurs, who use it as their virtual car boot sale.

e-Bay is famed for the weird and wonderful range of items that vendors put up for sale. Broken items and antiques sit quite happily side by side in the e-Bay listings.  The grossest item ever has to be the human kidney that was put on sale in 1999.

The e-Bay marketplace sells a wide range of products, both new and used.

What is the shipping policy here? Does the site offer express, next day delivery, guaranteed or international shipping? We read the small print and count the costs. .

The site has options for vendors and online stores to calculate shipping costs before shopping.  There is a PayPal operated shipping service for US vendors that includes the generation of free shipping labels and UPS pickup for the cost of standard shipping.

This generates informational emails to buyers and also includes a goods tracking system. The service is also available for international deliveries and includes the printing of customs documentation.

Non US vendors or those who prefer to take control of the process themselves can administrate the shipping process independently.
