Madeinnations is a badly named shopping site which aims to do good.  It wants to educate consumers about the origin of the goods they buy so that if politics or green issues are important to them, they can make informed purchases.

Some may choose to either support or boycott (buycott!) certain countries whereas others may elect to shop local in order to reduce the carbon footprint that comes from shipping and air freight.

How easy is it to compare prices on this site? Are the figures reliable and does it actually help you find a good deal? We did some price busting searches..
Good Idea Badly done

This site is not about price comparison it is about country of origin comparison.  It shows you where individual models from the same product range are manufactured so that you can factor this information in when you make purchases.

Unfortunately the site is very underdeveloped and also low on the content side.  The poor design means that you are given the model number of products but no picture or other prompt to verify that you are looking at the right product.

There is no facility to look at all a whole product category and see the different models in a list, not much shopping comparison is given.  We also felt that the map that comes up every time, with a pointer on the city of production was unnecessary.  It was all a little ironic really – the site is very sterile and lacks graphic design, yet at the end of every search they provide a colorful map, which his totally unnecessary.  We don’t need the geography lesson we just need the country of origin.

Very important for shopping comparisons - how well organized are the product or service categories? Is it easy to find what you want to compare? Or is this a maze?.

The navigation looks bad and goes the scenic route. The navigational categories are very unclear. We weren’t sure whether TVs would be listed under Home Electrical or Sound and Vision.  We also wondered where we should look for an MP4 - under Audio Visual? Audio? Portable Devices? Audio Equipment?  The headings were all too technical, unspecific and not product-focused enough for our liking.

In addition the navigation was slow and all text based – putting a few graphics on the site would cheer it up – it is all very white, text-based and drab.  Come on guys, lighten up a little!

What types of products can I buy and sell on this site? Or what can't I buy and sell on this site? We know the deal..
The site intends to be ‘crowd sourced’ and welcomes contributions from viewers.  At present there are way too few items on the database and many categories are empty of content or have minimal entries.

How large is the brand range on this site? Are we limited to a narrow selection of big name brands or does this site offer real consumer choice?.
There is an effort to pick up brand names on the site Panasonic, Philips, Apple, Sony etc. are all have products listed.

Does the site offer a comprehensive product search tool? If so, how accurate is its findings?.
You need to type in a brand or a product code but there is no place to simply type in a product category. Therefore, if I wanted to find out information on televisions I would have to think of the brands first or else go through the navigation menu.  If you know the brand and model number it does work though.
