Opinion on Epinion…

This site is a bit confusing.  On the one hand it promotes itself as a review site and on the other as a shopping comparison site.  However it lists products from online stores that do not contain reviews alongside those that do.

Since all price comparison sites worth their salt have customer ratings and reviews, we weren’t sure of the value of this site.  Reviews may have been a niche market when epinions started out but these days lots of sites have integrated them within the product information they offer. This is reflected by the reams of reviews that epinions itself draw from online stores.

The price comparison feature is standard and displays products listed by individual retail stores, highlighting their price and showcasing their merchant review and product reviews.  The epinion product reviews can be accessed from the top of the list in the header menu.

Very important for shopping comparisons - how well organized are the product or service categories? Is it easy to find what you want to compare? Or is this a maze?.

The navigation is by category and sub category.  There are small tabs on the upper menu of the homepage that can be clicked on for the full product range.

There are lots of helpful filters such as brand and price to help you narrow down the results page.  There is also a search box to type in a specific product.

What types of products can I buy and sell on this site? Or what can't I buy and sell on this site? We know the deal..

Epinions links in to all the major sites and has millions of products and services on display in over 30 different categories. There is no shortage of different categories of goods here, nor is there any lack of different items, models, styles and sizes.

Not only is there a large choice but many individual items have been located in a range of online stores and are therefore comparable to determine the best place to buy, perhaps influenced not only by price but also by customer reviews.

The search tool coped well with all we threw at it – English terms, band names, the lot.

Quality of the information. Here we look at the quality of the product comparisons, design and images on the website. Does the content give you a good idea of how the product looks and feels?.

Once you get into the comparison shopping mode there is a photo, detailed product specification plus reviews of both merchant and product.

If you only want to look at one product then further information is available at the merchant’s site.

There are masses of message boards on the site relating to different categories from the site.  It is billed as ‘a place for members to share ideas outside of reviews’.  There is also an RSS feed.
