Alice acts as a middleman not between retailers and shoppers but between manufacturers and shoppers.

Alice is a new concept and the site is currently still in beta.  Rather than act as a price comparison site, Alice ignores what the retail market is up to and goes straight to the makers, enabling them to offer some great prices.

Their odd choice of slogan is, ‘Never run out of toilet paper’.  New site, new concept, but does it work?

Alice Online

The site prides itself on its ability to find cheaper items than you can pick up locally.

Not only are their general items competitively priced, or cheaper than you are likely to pick up locally, but you can also access their ‘best deals’ section for some big savings and make use of the electronic coupons they flag up on the site.  In addition, Alice offers free shipping.

Sounds great, but there is always a but... We can’t help but feel that although they have some great offers on branded items (including many best sellers) they don’t have any local brands or store brands.  Since most of these are cheaper than the ‘big names’ Alice’s claims of reducing your shopping bill may not be true for everyone.

At the end of the day, if you buy brands then Alice will likely save you money, but if you are already a careful shopper, who is quite happy with own brands and unknowns, then don’t get too excited as you may well be better off carrying on as you are.

Very important for shopping comparisons - how well organized are the product or service categories? Is it easy to find what you want to compare? Or is this a maze?.

This online store is minimalist in design and has a clear navigation system that computer users of all levels will be able to figure out. There are featured products, deals and most popular items as well as categories to search. The navigation follows a logical order and all the little extras, like coupons, are put next to items so you just need to be in one place and click.

There is a good choice of filters to help you locate the products or brands you need.

What types of products can I buy and sell on this site? Or what can't I buy and sell on this site? We know the deal..

Alice stocks a wide range of non-perishable items such as paper towels, cereal, deodorant, toothpaste, toilet paper and more. Once you have found the item you want you can then set up a reminder to prompt you to order some more.

The range of products is vast but our only comment is that they are restricted to brand names only.

Another point to ponder is that Alice apparently provides all their manufacturers with data about YOU.  The products you buy, the regularity of your purchases and more.  Whilst this may worry some, it does actually inform manufacturers about their customers’ buying habit and should result in more refined offers and coupons being released by them.  Even so, it is a bit Big Brother, albeit with a sweetener at the end.

How large is the brand range on this site? Are we limited to a narrow selection of big name brands or does this site offer real consumer choice?.
This is a brand name shopping comparison site.  No watered down wannabees here!  If you like to shop brands then this is the place for you.  The site is new but already 5 of the top 10 manufacturers have already signed up to Alice.  Expect the brands to widen further in the future.

Quality of the information. Here we look at the quality of the product comparisons, design and images on the website. Does the content give you a good idea of how the product looks and feels?.

The details of products are clearly listed and with clear product pictures and descriptions so its very easy to compare shops or brands.

The site is easy to use and the products are simple to select.

Initial customers seem to be happy with the service, as this testimonial (one of many on the site) confirms; "As a busy mom of 5 kids, this is going to change my life! YIPPEE!! Thanks so much for giving us all a more efficient shopping method!" Teresa, Tulsa, OK.

How interactive is this site? Is there a Facebook Group? Twitter? RSS feeds? Linked In? Forum? We found out..
There is an Alice blog that promotes new products and offers as well as Facebook fan page and Twitter. There also appears to be an Alice community planned so that shoppers can discuss toilet paper and detergent to their hearts content.  As yet, with the site still in beta, this is not up and running yet.  Can’t wait though, should be riveting…
